What is Brick Laying?
Oftentimes the terms "mason" and "brick layer" are used interchangeably. However, they are actually two very different fields. A brick layer is a person who lays bricks to build projects like walls, chimneys, fences and decorative structures, while a mason does more complex projects like advanced stone and brick work, restorations, and curved structures. Most often, brick layers use bricks but they can also use concrete blocks or precast panels.
What Makes An Expert Brick Layer?
There are many things that determine the expertise of a brick layer. The following is a general discussion of what skills and abilities an expert brick layer must have:
- Working as a brick layer requires a high capacity of physical stamina and strength. This is because brick layers often have to lift, pull, and push heavy materials all day. The process of applying mortar, placing bricks, and troweling is highly repetitive and can easy cause muscle fatigue. Brick layers must squat, stoop, stand, reach, and climb for extended periods of time. Brick layers can also be exposed to the elements, as well as extreme heights and cramped work spaces. All of this is to say that an expert brick layer must be someone who is physically fit and able to endure all of these physically demanding conditions while still completing their project with quality.
- An expert brick layer must also have a solid grasp of general construction knowledge (i.e. materials, tools, processes). They must be able to read blueprints, use hand tools, power tools, and sometimes sledgehammers, hydraulic jacks, manlifts and mixers. Thus, someone who can call themselves an expert brick layer must have a well established understanding (and plenty of experience) with construction.
- A solid understanding of mathematics is a vital skill for an expert brick layer. Brick layers are often required to calculate the number of bricks and amount of mortar needed for any given job. This requires brick layers to know how to take precise measurements. Brick layers must be able to calculate angles, use basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- The majority of expert brick layers have experience in formal apprenticeships in order to become brick layers. The exact requirements for admission into one of these apprenticeship programs can vary, but as a rule a potential brick layer must have a high school diploma and needs to be at least 18 years of age.
